Everyone has at some stage in their lives experienced anger, whether in its mildest form of frustration or full on emotional outburst.

Anger in itself isn’t always a negative emotion. In the right context, you will be very justified in feeling angry. That being said, sometimes the emotion of anger can get out of control and come out when it isn’t warranted or justified. This can be for a number of reasons.

  • It may be because you haven’t enforced one of your boundaries
  • You may have allowed someone to over step the mark
  • Or that there is an external trigger for your outburst like a certain person’s behaviour

  • During an outburst of anger, stress hormones (adrenalin and noradrenaline) are released. These chemicals help maintain the heart rate, blood pressure and regulate the pancreas which controls the sugar balance in our blood.
  • Because of our anger, the usual (average) heart rate of 80 climbs up to 180 beats per minute.
  • An average blood pressure of 120 over 80 suddenly soars to 220 over 130, sometimes even higher.
  • Breathing becomes more rapid to get more oxygen into the body.
  • The energy burst causes a sugar deficiency, so that an angry person may ‘shake from anger.’
  • Muscles that are needed for fight or flight become very tight, causing an uptight and tense feeling in your body.
  • As the body prepares for survival, it safeguards itself against injury and bleeding. An angry person’s body releases chemicals to coagulate (clot) the blood in case it is wounded in battle, creating a situation that is potentially dangerous. Although there is no physical injury, the clot is formed, which can travel through the blood vessels to the brain or heart, therefore an angry person faces a higher risk of heart attack or stroke.
