Bad HabitsWhat Is A Habit?

A habit is simply anything that you do repetitively enough. That can be an action that you do (a behaviour), words or phrases that you say or thoughts that you think. When you do, say or think something enough your nervous system will take it on automatically so that you don’t have to think about it any more. At that point it has become a habit.

Habits can take the form of virtually anything:

  • smoking
  • drinking
  • nail biting
  • hair pulling
  • consistantly talking yourself down
  • eating
  • going into a depression (yes, this is also a habit!)
  • swearing

The list goes on.

How did I get this habit?

If you think about it, everything that is now a habit (and therefore very easy to do) started off as a very conscious thought or action. You had to really think about what you had to do, and that was hard work!

Take driving for example. When you first got behind the wheel of a car, you were overwhelmed with everything that you had to do in order just to make the car move; working three pedals when you only have two feet, looking in three mirrors as well as out of the windscreen, learning where the biting point was, using the gear stick and handbrake, not to mention the steering wheel.

BUT, and here is the secret, after consistantly getting behind the wheel of a car for a short period of time, you soon learnt how all of these things worked and remembered them, so each time you got into a car, you didn’t have to consciously think about something as much as you did the time before, until eventually, you had done it so many times you just got in the car and drove it.

Why have I got a habit that I don’t want?

Every habit works in the same way, whatever it is. You started off with a very conscious thought, worked at it and then learnt it off by heart. Now you don’t have to think about it at all.

That is because all habits are stored in your unconscious mind. Anything that you do repetitively is here; from blinking, breathing, making your heart beat and regulating your body temperature to knowing when and where to bite your nails or smoke a cigarette.

If you had to consciously think about making your heart beat, and blink all at the same time (let alone all of the other tasks your unconscious does for you), I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t be able to function as effectively at work or raise a family, and that is the key reason as to why your unconscious does it for you.

The thing is, that your unconscious does not filter what is good for you or what is bad. It simply takes a repetitive task and then runs it for you.

How can I get rid of my unwanted habit?

The good news is, that all that has happened is that you have made some very strong neuralogical links within your brain through repetition, and these links can be broken.

This is where NLP can be exceptionally effective. Through various techniques, neurological links can not only be broken (and therefore the habit is broken as well), but I will make a new neural connection to a better outcome for you.

It doesn’t matter how long you have had a habit for, it can still be rectified quickly and effectively.
